2023 marks the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, originally founded as The Disney Bros. Studio on October 16th, 1923. Walt Disney's previous studio, Laugh-O-Gram, went bankrupt earlier that year. When Walt moved to Los Angeles where his brother Roy was living, he came bearing his former studio's last project, a proof-of-concept film called "Alice's Wonderland." Never released theatrically, this short was sent out to distributors and eventually attracted a deal with Winkler Pictures, who commissioned 56 shorts between 1924 and 1927. Walt Disney is quoted as saying "It all started with a mouse," but here, you'll see that it actually all started with a girl. Alice is played by Virginia Davis, a modern child for the early twenties who knocks on the door of the Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City and is invited in by Walt Disney, who sits Alice at his desk and shows her how cartoons are made. Soon, the entire animation team is enthusiastically showing the precocious child what they can do. She's so enamored with the animation process that when she goes home, Alice dreams she's in Cartoonland! Predating the advent of sound, this silent film would've been accompanied by a musician playing music they felt fit the imagery. This version is accompanied by five of the biggest hit songs of 1923 - "Dreamy Melody," "Kansas City Stomps," "Singing Down the Lane," "Bambalina," and "Chimes Blues."
