Blackbeard is a name we all seem to know, gone down in history as one of most legendary pirates of all time. But what do we know about the man behind the flaming beard? Who was he? What did he look like? Today we’ll tell you his story, and use contemporary sources to decipher what he really looked like. 0:00 Early Life & Piracy 16:54 What did Blackbeard Look Like 20:29 Re-creations Revealed The man history remembers as Blackbeard was likely born around 1680 in Bristol, England, possibly into a well-off family. He was literate - rare for the time - and eventually made his way to the Caribbean as a privateer during Queen Anne’s War (1702-1713), when nations hired seafarers to attack enemy ships. Historians believe his real name was Edward Thatch (or Teach). In the 1690s, Thatch began privateering out of Jamaica and quickly gained a reputation for bravery and skill. After the war ended, many privateers, unwilling to return to civilian life, turned to piracy. They congregated on New Providence, a pirate haven, and formed the “Flying Gang.” These pirates lived by a code emphasizing democracy, equal shares, and surprisingly wholesome rules - no fighting on board, no gambling, lights out by 8. Former slaves could even rise to captaincy. Around 1716, Thatch joined Captain Benjamin Hornigold and soon took command of his own ship. His signature look - a long black beard - made him stand out. Blackbeard and Hornigold raided ships near Cuba. Their prize included wine, cargo, and extra ships. By 1717, Thatch took over a captured slave ship, La Concorde, renamed it Queen Anne’s Revenge, outfitted it with 40 guns, and built a small fleet. Unlike Hornigold, Blackbeard had no loyalty to the British crown, causing a rift between them. Blackbeard’s reputation grew quickly. He blockaded ports, raided ships from the Caribbean to the American coast, and terrified enemies often into surrendering without violence. One notable event was his 1718 blockade of Charleston, South Carolina - not for treasure, but for medicine. No blood was shed, and after receiving the supplies, he simply sailed away. Despite receiving a pardon and briefly settling on Ocracoke Island, Blackbeard resumed piracy. His activities drew the attention of Virginia’s Governor Alexander Spotswood, who dispatched Royal Navy officer Robert Maynard to eliminate him. On November 22, 1718, Maynard ambushed Blackbeard’s ship. After a brutal battle, Blackbeard was killed - shot five times and slashed over 20 times before falling. His head was displayed on a pike in Chesapeake Bay as a warning to others. Though Edward Thatch died, Blackbeard lived on in legend. His fearsome image - carefully cultivated with dramatic clothing, weapons, and possibly even slow-burning fuses in his hat - became iconic. Eyewitnesses described him as a tall, lean man with a long black beard. While later stories exaggerated his appearance, most agree he preferred fear over violence to get what he wanted. Pirates of the era, while romanticized, often dressed practically: loose shirts, trousers, waistcoats, and scarves. Captains like Blackbeard had more flair, sometimes wearing velvet coats or even court wigs. Still, daily life at sea was rough, and his appearance likely reflected that. More than a criminal, Blackbeard was a master of image and intimidation. His story became larger than life - not just a man, but a symbol of piracy’s golden age.
