I spent a day exploring beaches around Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island Hawaii, starting at an ancient Hawaiian temple and ending at a dramatic black sand beach. Here's what I found along the Kohala Coast - from family-friendly spots with facilities to quieter beaches locals prefer. BEACHES FEATURED: Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site Ancient Hawaiian temple built by Kamehameha I (1790-1791). Free admission, visitor center with historical exhibits. A significant cultural landmark overlooking the Kohala Coast. Spencer Beach Park Protected family-friendly beach with calm waters, shaded picnic areas, restrooms, showers, and lifeguards. About 20 minutes from Waikoloa Beach Resort. Hapuna Beach State Park Big Island's largest white sand beach stretching half a mile. State park facilities, popular for bodysurfing. Can have strong currents in winter. Approximately 25 minutes from Waikoloa. Waialea Beach (Beach 69) Small bay known locally as Beach 69 after the nearby mile marker. Excellent snorkeling, popular with locals. Limited parking (approximately 20 spots). About 27 minutes from Waikoloa. ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach (A-Bay) Palm-lined beach featuring two ancient Hawaiian fishponds (Kuualiʻi and Kahapapa) dating back over 700 years. Protected waters, water sports rentals available. Just 10 minutes from Waikoloa Beach Resort - the closest beach on this tour. 49 Black Sand Beach Dramatic volcanic black sand beach created by the 1859 Mauna Loa lava flow. Mix of black sand and smooth lava pebbles. Popular spot for sea turtle sightings. Natural, minimal facilities. About 20 minutes north of Waikoloa. I started at the resort area and drove north along the Kohala Coast, ending at the black sand beach near Kiholo Bay. BEST TIMES TO VISIT: Arrive early for parking at popular beaches like Hapuna and Kaunaʻoa (limited to 20 public spots). Spencer Beach and A-Bay have larger parking areas. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends.
