With a population of less than a million, Fiji has a strong culture of community and family. People also have a respect for Christianity, as it spread throughout the Fijian islands in the 19th century. But this respect is because it is part of the culture, not because of the person and work of Jesus Christ. There is a prevailing problem of poor preaching across Fiji, with pastors ostensibly using the Bible but pushing their own agenda and not applying God’s Word to people’s lives. The so-called ‘prosperity Gospel’ is also affecting the fabric of Fijian culture, even in individual families.
