H2020 BIONICO Project: Green hydrogen production from biogas moves from theory to reality

The H2020 BIONICO project, started in September 2015, aims at demonstrating at large scale a novel membrane reactor for conversion of biogas to pure hydrogen in a single step. After the experimental activity and the preliminary system design, the prototype, able to produce about 100 kg/day of pure hydrogen, has been manufactured. The membrane reactor, core of the BIONICO system, contains 125 tubular ceramic supported membranes and uses a new catalyst specifically developed for biogas reforming. By using the novel intensified reactor, direct conversion of biogas to pure hydrogen is achieved in a single step, which results in an increase of the overall efficiency (more than 70%), component savings and potential cost reduction. BIONICO system will be tested in lab for 500h and will later be installed in a real biogas plant in Portugal for long-term tests.
