In the early 1980s, Mark Dixon was in his late 20s and barely getting by as the lead singer of a cover band in Niagara Falls, New York. After responding to a cryptic advertisement in the back pages of Rolling Stone magazine, he received a phone call from Tom Scholz, the founder of the rock band Boston, that would upend his life. I uncovered this buried piece or rock history while reading court transcripts for Power Soak, my book about Tom Scholz and Boston. I tracked Dixon down still living in the Buffalo area and convinced him to participate in this video. Though his voice has changed with time, he agreed to speak candidly, offering a firsthand account of how Scholz quietly searched for and auditioned potential replacements for Brad Delp during a rocky period for the band. What did you think of the story? Do you recall Mark Dixon's band from the Western New York area? If you have any recordings of him or memories from that era, I'd love to hear from you in the comments.
