#gimmick #chiptune #c64 #gamegrooves SUNSOFT's 1992 cult favorite Gimmick! features one of the boldest soundtracks to have ever graced the Famicom's library. Originally composed by prolific jazz musician Masashi Kageyama, the soundtrack utilized an expanded sound chip which pushed the limits of what the console was capable of. While the game itself performed well in Japan, Gimmick! (aka Mr. Gimmick) never saw an officially localized release outside of Scandinavia. Tragically, Masashi Kageyama passed away in September 2025 at the age of 62, following a battle with stomach cancer. In November, during Gastric Cancer Awareness Month, international VGM collective GameGrooves put their heads together to collaborate on an album dedicated to the late Kageyama. Gimmick!'s Stage 1 theme "Happy Birthday" has been a long-time favorite of mine, and I wanted to put my own spin on things by replacing the original SUNSOFT 5B sound chip with the Commodore 64's iconic SID. Hope y'all enjoy the retro inspired visuals, too! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lion Heart: A Tribute to Masashi Kageyama OUT NOW on Bandcamp: https://gamegroovescharity.bandcamp.c...
