Europe is stronger than Russia and is able to defeat it in any kind of conflict, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Thursday (March 6). "Europe as a whole is truly capable of winning any military, financial, economic confrontation with Russia - we are simply stronger," Tusk told reporters in Brussels ahead of a European Union summit. "We just had to start believing in it. And today it seems to be happening." European leaders are expected to agree to ramp up defence spending and reaffirm support for Ukraine, after Donald Trump's suspension of military aid to Kyiv fueled concerns the EU can no longer rely on U.S. protection. Tusk said maintaining NATO and the alliance with the U.S. should be an "absolute priority". Leaders of the European Union's 27 countries will be joined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at a summit in Brussels, although Hungary's nationalist leader Viktor Orban, a Trump ally, may veto a unanimous statement backing Kyiv. While the summit will offer words of support and plan for an increase in defence spending, Europe is not expected to be able to fully replace suspended U.S. aid. Washington provided more than 40% of military aid to Ukraine last year, according to NATO, some of which Europe could not easily provide.
