Leaders Dialogue : "The BRICS and the new age of multilateralism" His Excellency Ronald MICALLEF, Ambassador, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Rwanda and African Union, Republic of Malta in conversation with : Joao SOUSA, Managing Director, Public Affairs Council --- The Africa Political Outlook is a summit that brings together experts, diplomats and political and economic decision-makers from Africa, Europe and the rest of the world to discuss the major governance issues facing the African continent. A platform for meetings and dialogue, the aim of this major international event is to develop appropriate responses in order to anticipate crises, contribute to the consolidation of democratic institutions and strengthen political, diplomatic and economic governance on the African continent. --- 2024: Africa at a Crossroads As dawn breaks in 2024, the continent faces persistent economic challenges, a resurgence of coups d'état, currency volatility, political instability, inflation, and threats linked to climate change, dimming hopes for emergence and the achievement of sustainable development goals. In 2023, Sub-Saharan Africa's economic growth decreased from 4% in 2022 to 3.3% due to ongoing global economic uncertainties, slow recovery among key trading partners, and a high level of fragility and conflict exacerbated by climate change. Indeed, the growing impact of climate change amplifies the continent's vulnerability to extreme weather phenomena, including heavy rainfall, droughts, heatwaves, and storms. These events cause land degradation, flooding, wildfires, and landslides, exacerbating issues of food and water security, conflicts, mass migrations, and diplomatic tensions with Europe. The world's multipolarization and the resurgence of blocs reposition Africa at the heart of superpowers' interests, thus exposing the continent to global shocks that test the resilience of its societies and peoples. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia, along with the re-emergence of historical tensions in the Middle East, heralds a return to danger and violence. The path to prosperity proves more challenging than it first appears, but hope remains. The theme "Africa at the Crossroads" reflects the reality of a continent faced with a multitude of major challenges but is also full of resources and energies to reconnect with a recovery trajectory in order to accelerate progress. #APO2024 #AfricaPoliticalOutlook
