Here’s a simple description of the mind-body connection. Do you have a hard time understanding or explaining your anxiety or hypervigilance? This video is made for you. By now, you likely understand how intricately connected your mind and body are. Anxious thoughts might put knots in your stomach, make your heart flutter, cause your jaw to tighten, or make you sweat. It’s no coincidence that your body is so in tune with your thoughts. And it works both ways. What you do with your body can either stimulate, relax, or distract your mind. But the mind-body connection goes further than just mindset work. While mindset IS important, if our nervous system is dysregulated, mindset work alone is unlikely to be very effective. We build resilience through nervous system regulation, not through a growth mindset. A growth mindset means that you thrive on challenges and don’t see failure as a way to describe yourself, but as a springboard for growth. If you’re living in a constant state of survival, you’re not going to have the capacity to welcome additional challenges and see them as opportunities. 👉🏼Because what’s really going on—the reason we feel hopelessly stuck—is that we don’t feel safe. To change our mindset, we must develop an awareness of our inner dialogue and then recognize we have a CHOICE to change it. But we can’t skip nervous system regulation and jump to choice, because choice is the essence of regulation. In Vital-Side, we use a combo of top-down and bottom-up approaches to healing to help you build resilience and get to a place where a growth mindset is possible. The top-down approach is all about producing gradual changes in our thinking brain. Using targeted techniques to prompt positive changes to our emotions, we can then begin to feel a greater sense of safety within our bodies. The bottom-up approach uses body-based interventions to change the stress response’s imprint on the body by directly accessing the limbic system and targeting sensory receptors located throughout the body.
