Gomorrah: Director Matteo Garrone Speaks About His Film

Winner of the Golden Palm at Cannes 2008, Gomorrah premiered in New York at the NYFF and is now in theatrical release. At the NYFF press conference in October, Garrone discusses the film, adapted from 26-year-old Roberto Saviano's 2006 bestseller. Like the book, the film provides a gripping inside look at the brutal, insidious workings of the camorra through five interweaving stories, tracking characters trying to cope or escape from its stranglehold on international industries as diverse as haute couture and the illegal dumping of toxic waste. Chillingly referred to (though not dramatized) in the film is the camorra's involvement in contracting around Ground Zero. While the film is superbly shot and directed on a scale both vast and intimate, it's far from being a glamorization of the mafia.
