In this video, I explain the cricoid cartilage of the larynx in a simple, visual, and hands-on way, helping you understand its shape, attachments, and functional importance. We begin by making a paper model of the cricoid cartilage using paper, pencil, scissors, and a stapler, so that you can hold the cricoid cartilage in your hand and understand its three-dimensional structure. Using this paper model as a reference, I explain the anterior, lateral, and posterior views of the cricoid cartilage. I then describe the attachments to the anterior arch of the cricoid cartilage, supported by clear, hand-drawn diagrams. This includes the cricovocal membrane, cricothyroid muscle, and lateral cricoarytenoid muscle. Next, we focus on the posterior lamina of the cricoid cartilage and its attachment to the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle. A diagram-based comparison of lateral and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles is used to clearly explain adduction and abduction of the vocal cords. You will understand why the posterior cricoarytenoid is called the “life-saving muscle” of the larynx. The video ends with a single revision sheet summarizing everything discussed about the cricoid cartilage, its membranes, muscles, and ligaments. This video is especially helpful for students who find the larynx confusing while studying head and neck anatomy. It explains the mechanism of vocal cord movement in a clear, logical, and visual manner. Who is this video for? MBBS anatomy students Dental students Nursing students Speech and sound / phonation students Physiotherapy students ENT (Otorhinolaryngology) postgraduate students If you are studying the larynx, phonation, or vocal cord movements, this video will help you build strong anatomical understanding. 0:00 Introduction 0:22 Paper cutout of cricoid cartilage 3:20 Articulation of paper cutout of cricoid cartilage with paper cutout of thyroid cartilage 4:00 Parts of cricoid cartilage 6:53 Anterior arch of cricoid cartilage 8:18 Attachments of cricoid cartilage (cricovocal membrane, vocal ligament) 11:37 Lateral and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles 12:02 Cricothyroid muscle 13:45 Posterior lamina of cricoid cartilage 17:16 Lateral and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles and their actions (deep lateral cricoarytenoid) 21:15 Posterior cricoarytenoid muscle – action 24:36 Life saving muscle: Posterior cricoarytenoid muscle?
