Fred Rich & His Hotel Astor Orchestra - Baltimore, Fox-Trot (Healy, Kahal – McHugh) with Vocal Chorus by Arthur Humby, Columbia 1927 (UK) HOTE: "Baltimore" is a hot American fox-trot written by the great Jimmy McHugh (music) and Dan Healy and Irving Kahal (lyrics) in 1927 and first performed that same year by the Clarence Williams Blue Five. The title, however, refers not to the great seaport of Maryland, but to a ballroom dance called The Baltimore, which was born there. According to the text, it was supposed to become "more popular than the Black Bottom or Charleston," but that didn't happen. Perhaps the reason was the instructions on how to dance it, which, according to the text, seems rather difficult to follow: "swayin' like an old see-saw" when you "count the rhythm, double it, repeat it, and then slide your feel right over the floor...". The music, however, is fascinating, a great tribute to the hot dance era of the 1920s. Especially when played by Frieddie Rich's amazing Astor Hotel dance band.
