One policy change, one verification requirement, one outage, and you can lose reach overnight. In this video I explain why I’m moving to Mattermost as a practical Discord alternative, why self-hosting matters, and how you can run your own community chat without handing the keys to a third party. Why Mattermost instead of Discord Mattermost is a Slack-style platform that gives you the core thing most communities actually need: reliable channels, DMs, permissions, and searchable history. It is not trying to be “Discord but self-hosted”; it is trying to be dependable, admin-friendly, and under your control. Why self-host at all Self-hosting is about ownership and resilience: • You control access rules, retention, and moderation tooling • You are not exposed to surprise platform changes • You can put your community behind your own domain • You decide what gets logged, stored, and deleted • You can run it locally or on a VPS, and migrate whenever you want Calls without paying enterprise prices You can add voice/video calls via Jitsi integration, or use Mattermost Calls if you want to keep everything inside your own stack. Either way, you avoid the “platform tax” where basic features become a subscription trap.
