Omotesenke-ryu [表千家流] tea class [virus tea] February 12, 2022. For our students we are videoing our class so they can have some tea experience during the emergency. Since there is just the two of us there are some limitations on what we can do. This practice is of bonkogo, building the fire using a special incense container. Because it is “special” we use wood chip incense placed by hand so as not to damage it. We are practicing with a Joodana. The Joodana was devised by Joo and it is said that it was made so that using it would require using the sunken hearth. Joo is said to have been one of Rikyu’s teachers. When we practice, we usually use the Rikyu style “mizutsugi”, with a spout cover as it is a little more difficult than the Omotesenke version without a spout cover.
