The electrification of buildings has been rising on the sustainability agenda in the past few years, one of the reasons is the decarbonisation of the electricity grid resulting in lower emissions than the gas grid. This has pushed the industry to look at ways that commercial buildings can electrify, and the effects this might have on the electricity grid. We gathered three experts to talk on this subject including an overview of CIBSE’s TM 67, the importance of retrofitting with electrification in mind and the impact electrification could have on the electricity grid. There was also a panel discussion on questions submitted by the audience. Speakers: • Dr Tony Day, Energy Research Consultant, Tony Day • Jennifer Elias, Principal Building Performance Engineer, AECOM • Daniel Burke, SSE Video content: 00:00 Start 00:01 Introduction by Helen Gavin 01:46 Maria Spyrou introduces the Energy Performance Group and its Power Hour 05:56 Dr Tony Day: “TM67: The Electrification of Buildings for Net Zero” 17:07 Jennifer Elias: “Decarbonisation of Existing Assets” 27:53 Daniel Burke: “Distribution System Operation (DSO) Flexibility Markets as an Enabler for Net Zero and Electrification” 41:00 Start of the Q&A session 55:10 Closing comment by each speaker 57:43 Goodbyes The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) is the professional body that exists to advance and promote the art, science and practice of building services engineering, to invest in education and research, and to support our community of built environment professionals in their pursuit of excellence.
