Pallavaneswaram Pallavaneswarar Temple : This temple is situated in the old town of Kaveripoompattinam . This place was the first capital of the Chozha kingdom before its eventual submersion into the sea. The epic Silapadikkaram and its sister epic Manimekalai, were based on this place. It is around 19 Kms south east of Sirkazhi and 22 Kms from Mayiladuthurai on the Poompuhar road. The temple is in front of the excavation site at Poompuhar. The last Kumbabishekam was done in 2008. We are visiting the temple of Shri Soundaranayaki sametha Shri Pallavaneswarar. This is one of the Pancha Vaneswara kshetrams of Lord Shiva. It was visited by Thirugnana Sambandar and he had sung thevarams on this Lord. This old temple was built by the early Chozha Kings around 1st century and there were lot of subsequent additions. Conversion of this temple into a stone edifice could have happened later. The temple is open from 6.30 am to noon and from 4.30 to 7.30 pm. This temple is having a connection with Pallava kingdom. Since one of the Pallava kings did extensive work, including converting the brick/mortar into a stone one,on this small temple of five tiered gopuram and a single prakaram, the place was called Pallavaneswaram and the Lord, Pallavaneswarar. The last renovation was done in 1995. The sthala vruksham is Jasmine and the theerthams are Jhanavi and Sangama Theertham. There is no flag post. The entrance to the temple is from the southern side. At the entrance, there is a majestic five tiered Gopuram with the theertham in front of it. The temple faces Bay of Bengal. River Kaveri joins the sea very close to this temple. Hence this place was called Kaveri Puhum (entering) Pattinam, which became Kaveripoompattinam and now Poompuhar. This was the birthplace of Saint Pattinathar, who had written extensively on Saivite and Hindu philosophies. There is a belief that Kubera took birth as Pattinathar. His Shiva Deeksha is believed to have been done by Lord Shiva Himself! The Saint is so popular that this temple itself is referred to as Pattinathar Temple. As per local legends, Shiva came as his son and He taught him the principles of detachment. In this town, a couple by name Sivanesar and Gnanakamalambika lived. After praying to Shiva, they were blessed with a son and they named him, Thiruvenkadan, after the Lord at Thiruvenkadu. The family was in export business. After his father, Thiruvenkadan took over the business and married Sivakalai. The couple did not have any children and they were praying the Lord to bless them with a child. In the meanwhile, Lord Shiva was born as a son of a poor couple, Siva Sarmar and Susheelai. They named the child as Marudavanan. Lord in their dream had advised them to give the child in adoption to Thiruvenkadar. The childless couple were very happy and reared up the child as their own. When he came of age, father sent him on an export assignment to a foreign country. When he returned home after finishing the business, the father asked him about what he had brought. Marudavanan gave a box . When Thiruvenkadar opened the box, he found to his dismay that it contained only a piece of cow dung cake. He was very angry and threw it down and then found that it contained, apart from gold and gems, a written message: even a broken needle cannot accompany on the last journey. Thereafter, Marudavanan disappeared. Thiruvenkadar understood the message that one should have detachment from all the wealth and luxury. He renounced everything and became a mendicant and was named Pattinathar. He was so much detached that he considered that owning even a Thiruvodu, makes one a Grahastha, with attachments! The Moolavar is in the central shrine. He is relatively a large Lingam. Ambal Soundaranayaki occupies a south facing shrine. The shrines of Surya, Chandra, Saneeswara, Bhairava and Nataraja are in the prakaram. The navagrahams face the Lord and hence all of them are facing the west, unlike any other temple. The shrine of Nataraja is called Sabapathi Sabha which is very similar to the one in Chidambaram. There is a separate shrine for Sambapathi Amman. This Amman finds a mention in the Sangam literature. There are two Durgas and two Chandikeswarars. For More Divine Songs Download Giri Music App►►: Android App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/de... iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/giri/...
