In this episode we bring to life the history of Japanese castles using gameplay from Assassin's Creed Shadows. We begin with a broad overview of the history of fortifications in ancient Japan. This began early on with the fortification of temples and noble homes. Yet it would primarily be in the late Heian period of the 11th century that a particular style of construction emerged known as the Yamashiro (or hill castle). The basic idea was to create terraces atop hills and mountains and then reinforce them with interconnected baileys. From then on, these fortifications would get increasingly large, covering entire mountains in intricate killing fields. Eventually the greatest of these would be so massive that they had to be moved down into the plains.
