LACMA Art + Technology Lab grant recipient Julia Christensen shares a multimedia presentation of her project and forthcoming book, Upgrade Available (Dancing Foxes Press, Spring 2020), about how “upgrade culture” fundamentally impacts our experience of time. Christensen’s artwork and writing examine how the perceived notion that one must constantly upgrade electronics and media impacts our sense of time on many levels––in our daily lives, over our lifetimes, as institutional time, and finally, in our perception of a space-time continuum. The event included conversations between Christensen and selected artists, curators, and writers about her ongoing Art + Technology Lab project. The conversation is illustrated with images, videos, and writings from the project and book. Panelists include Aria Dean, editor and curator at Rhizome and Jessica Gambling, LACMA archivist. ___ About the Art + Technology Lab Inspired by the spirit of LACMA's original Art and Technology program (1967–71), which paired artists with technology companies in Southern California, the Art + Technology Lab at LACMA supports artist experiments with emerging technology. Through our sponsors, the Lab provides grants, in-kind support, and facilities at the museum to develop new artist projects. The Lab is part of The Hyundai Project: Art + Technology at LACMA, a joint initiative exploring convergence of art and technology. Seed funding for the development of the Art + Technology Lab was provided by the Los Angeles County Quality and Productivity Commission through the Productivity Investment Fund and LACMA Trustee David Bohnett.
