The 1980s saw a mammoth building boom in the City of London with more than a third of the Square Mile being redeveloped. Driven by fear of competition from Canary Wharf, this boom resulted in many new buildings of varying architectural quality. Plenty of space was unlet at the time of this documentary as a result of over-capacity and the economy going into downturn. Includes discussion of the at-the-time unresolved planning battle over the proposed James Stirling building for the No.1 Poultry Mappin and Webb site. Directed by Bill Eagles. Contributors include the architects Terry Farrell, Julian Ryder-Richardson, Bruce Graham and Richard Rogers, developers Stuart Lipton, Lord Palumbo and David King, critics Leon Krier, Martin Pawley and Frank Duffy and, from the City of London authorities, Peter Rees, Michael Cassidy and Brian Jenkins. End missing (but not much). Part of a weekend of programmes about London entitled London Weekend broadcast over the weekend of 2-3 January 1993.
