Here we videoed the Verde Canyon Railroad tourist trains between Clarkdale and Sycamore. I apologize for the poor quality of the TAPCO and S O B Canyon drone videos, this is the first time I was able to get a drone in the air to photograph a train. Railfanning the line was pretty easy with a vehicle with high clearance and 4WD, Clarkdale Depot and TAPCO are the only spots where you can get to the line without really leaving pavement. Getting to Sycamore Canyon I didnt need 4WD, but needed the high clearance. Then getting to S O B Canyon I needed the high clearance and had to switch to 4WD to get through one spot. Between Sycamore and Perkinsville, there are no roads, however there is a dirt road running out of Jerome up to Williams that passes through Perkinsville if one wanted to catch the train here at the turn around. This line was built in 1912 by the Verde Valley Railroad, a subsidiary of the Santa Fe. Trains ran down the ATSF Peavine Line (Now the BNSF Phoenix Sub) from the mainline at Williams or Phoenix to Drake where they crawled down the branch to Clarkdale to haul copper from the mines in nearby Jerome. In 1953, the United Verde copper mine closed in Jerome shutting down a major amount of the traffic on the line. In 1959, Phoenix Cement Company opened in Clarkdale to supply concrete to build the Glen Canyon Dam. In 1989, the Santa Fe sold the branch to David Durbano who started the Arizona Central Railroad hauling cement and coal to and from the cement plant. In November of 1990, tourist operations started running with one of the Arizona Central engines and several passenger cars. In 1997, the ex Wyoming-Colorado passenger equipment (another line owned by Durbano up in Wyoming) were moved to Arizona. With two FP7s and nearly 20 passenger cars, the Verde Canyon Railroad was formed running between Clarkdale and Perkinsville. Today, the quarter mile long trail snakes through the scenic Verde Canyon carrying over 100,000 passengers a year Type of train: Tourist/Heritage Passenger Date and time: 12/23-31/2025 Route: Clarkdale, AZ-Perkinsville, AZ Frequency: 1-2 roundtrips daily Railcar count: 18 Locomotives: VCRR 1512 - EMD FP7 VCRR 1510 - EMD FP7 Timestamps and Locations: 0:00 - 882 Luke Ln - Clarkdale Depot - 12/23 3:21 - 3400 Sycamore Canyon Rd - TAPCO - 12/31 8:29 - Near Sycamore Canyon - 12/31 13:18 - S O B Canyon - 12/28 Wonderful Epic Relaxing Music by Sleepy Wolf C is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons. org/licenses/by/4.0/
