Bush says they will get Mullah Omar but doesn't comfirm military mission

(31 Dec 2001) 1. Close-up Bush signing autographs 2. SOUNDBITE: (English) George Bush, U.S. President. "The same pursuit - we are going to get him and it is just a matter of when. You know you hear all kinds of reports and all kinds of rumours, you know you got people saying he is in a cave, people saying he is dead, people saying he is in Pakistan and all I know is that he is running. And anytime you get a person running it means you are going to get him pretty soon and the same with Mullah Omar, it is just a matter of time. And I am patient and so is our military there is no artificial time lines or deadlines, the definition of success is making sure the Taliban is out of existence, helping rebuild Afghanistan and disrupting this international terrorist network and we are doing a darn good job of it too." (Q: Tensions between India and Pakistan?) A: Well a couple of days ago I had a good talk with both Prime Minister Vajpayee and President Musharraf. I urged President Musharraf to do everything he could to crack down on the terrorist network that had bombed the Indian parliament, or raided the Indian parliament. In my conversation with the Indian Prime Minister I said I can understand how he feels, if someone attacked the U-S Capitol I would feel angry too. I urged, however I urged ... I explained to the Indian Prime Minister while I understand his anger I was hoping they were not heading for war - give us all a chance to work with President Musharraf to bring the terrorists to justice and today, as you know, he apprehended the head of what they call L.E.T (Lashkar-e-Taiba) that's after he had apprehended the head of G.E.M (he says G instead of J - the initials stand for Jaish-e-Mohammed) so he has come down hard and I appreciate his efforts. Terror is terror and the fact that the Pakistan President is after terrorists is a good sign." 3. Close-up view as Bush walks away from cameras. STORYLINE: U-S President George Bush said on Monday that the U-S military was intent on tracking down Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar and Osama bin Laden, but would not confirm that any military mission was under way. His comments came as helicopters packed with marines in full combat gear flew out of the airport in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar. The helicopters and appeared to be heading northwest, toward the Baghram area where Afghan officials have said Mullah Mohammed Omar might be hiding. The Afghan prime minister Hamid Karzai said they were hunting for Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar and that his government had been notified of the U-S operation. There has been speculation for days around the Marine base that an effort to snatch Omar might be looming. A B-52 bomber and a fighter jet also were seen heading in the same direction. Speaking in Crawford as he stopped for lunch, President Bush said the U-S are determined to get both bin Laden and Mullah Omar. When asked by reporters on his involvement in diffusing the tensions between India and Pakistan, Bush said he had urged Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee to give Pakistani President General Musharraf time to capture those involved in terrorism.
