Kathryn Schroeder is a Branch Davidian survivor. In Part 7, she describes her experience of the raid by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents on February 28, 1993. By that time, the community members were living in the large residence. The first article in “The Sinful Messiah” series in the Waco Tribune-Herald had been published the day before. The community members and David Koresh knew that they were under surveillance by the men who had moved in across the street from Mount Carmel Center. They did not know they were ATF agents, but they figured they were some sort of law enforcement agents. They were aware that Robert Rodriguez, who was calling himself Robert Gonzalez, was an undercover agent. Nevertheless, David Koresh had been giving him Bible studies to try to convert him to the message. Kathy had a room on the first floor that she shared with her four children. She thinks that her room had the third window from the front door on the left side when facing the front of the building. She was the only woman living with her children on the first floor, where the men’s rooms were located. [The other mothers lived in second-floor rooms. Women who did not have children lived in rooms in the two end towers.] David Jones, a member of the community, notified David Koresh that he had learned that a raid was imminent. The women gathered in the chapel. It turned out that David Koresh had not said for the women to be in the chapel, so he told them all to leave and go back to their rooms. That morning Kathy had cooked breakfast for everyone as usual. Her children were in the room that they called “home.” Kathy had brought breakfast to the children, and they were eating when then alert from David Jones was received. After the women were told to leave the chapel and go back to their rooms, Kathy started getting her children dressed. She wanted the children to have their shoes on in case they had to run to the bus that had been buried as part of a tunnel to a storm shelter that was being constructed. As she was clearing away the breakfast plates, she saw the two covered cattle trailers pulled by two trucks pull into the driveway and up to the building’s front gate of the picket fence. The Malamute dog and her four puppies were in the pen right in front of her room’s window, inside the picket fence in front of the building. She describes what was in her room. On the room’s wall opposite the window she had plastic jugs containing water on a shelf. She saw men dressed in black jump out of the back of the first trailer heading toward the front door. She does not recall that they wore any identifying symbols on their clothing. She did not have a view of the second cattle trailer. She got down on the floor again with her kids. The first thing she heard was yelps from the Malamute mother and her four puppies when they were shot by the agents. Kathy’s children heard that also. Then she heard more pops and realized they were gunshots. At one point she raised her head again and saw a bullet hole in her window right at her eye level. She ducked down again, thinking, “That was six inches above my head.” From that point, she stayed down on the floor with her children. She was lying next to one bunkbed with Chrissie and Bryan underneath it, and Scott and Jake were under the bunkbed on the other side of the room. Bryan, the youngest, fell asleep. She heard a strange sound coming from the back of her room. After the gunshots ended she figured out the sound was caused by water running out of the plastic water bottles on the shelf. The apparently 45-minute shootout seemed like 6 hours. During the shootout, she felt glad that David Koresh’s “Mighty Men” were there to protect her. The “Mighty Men” would not let those men with guns into the building and harm the women and children. She had no weapon in her room, so she was dependent on the “Mighty Men” to protect them. Eventually, when there was a cease fire, Greg Summers opened her door and stuck his head in her room to see if they were okay. She said they were okay, so he shut the door and left. After Kathy felt assured that the shooting had stopped, she and the children came out of her room into the hallway.
