It encompasses the Old Port and is defined by boundaries including McGill Street to the west, Ruelle des Fortifications to the north, rue Saint-André to the east, and the Saint Lawrence River to the south. Recent boundary changes have extended the area to include Rue des Soeurs Grises on the west side, Saint Antoine Street to the north, and Saint Hubert Street to the east. Originally established in 1642 by French settlers as Fort Ville-Marie, the area retains many buildings from the New France era. The neighborhood shares its name with the broader borough of Ville-Marie. In recognition of its cultural and historical significance, much of Old Montreal was designated a historic district by Quebec’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs in 1964.
