Clematis armandii* smells amazing! It blooms in late winter or very early spring when much of the garden is sleeping. This video shows how to make sure the flowers get to have their show by thinning out unwanted growth. Also, learn how to keep this very large vine from taking over. A note 2024: These days, right after flowers fade, I prune my Clematis armandii down to two or three good new, long leaders every 2 years and guide the vine along the fence again. I do this now because too much dead builds up underneath and it also becomes too heavy. So far, my vine has responded very well to this rejuvenation pruning. Make sure to leave 2 or 3 or 5 long, new stems to replace the old structure. Avoid pruning completely down to nothing. Also, timing is critical (just after flowers fade). -mary
