In the spring of her freshman year, Madison Dawkins, C’19, took a seminar called Race, Crime, and Punishment with Marie Gottschalk, Professor of Political Science. The course introduced her to the crisis of mass incarceration and led her to create her own minor in race and criminal justice through Africana Studies, found a student organization to educate the campus community on criminal justice reform, and lead a health and mindfulness program at the Riverside Correctional Facility. For Madison, the Power of Penn Arts & Sciences means forging her own path, finding support along the way. The Power of Penn Arts & Sciences is a fundraising campaign that supports students, faculty, and innovative research on pressing challenges from creating a sustainable plant and harnessing the power of the brain, to exploring the human experience and driving global change.
