Hosted by the Eastern Report. Today, we have with us noted historian Dr. Christophe Jaffrelot on our show. Today, we will discuss Dr. Jaffrelot's book 'India's First Dictatorship: The Emergency, 1975-1977.' In June 1975 Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency, resulting in a 21-month suspension of democracy across India. Christophe Jaffrelot and Pratinav Anil explore this black page in India's history, a constitutional dictatorship of unequal impact, with South India, largely spared thanks to the resilience of Indian federalism. Christophe Jaffrelot is Research Director at CERI Sciences Po/CNRS and Professor of Indian Politics and Sociology at the King’s India Institute. His most recent book is Majoritarian State. ▬ Contents of this video ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 - Highlights 00:54 - Intro 02:32 - Book reveal 02:48 - Book motivation 04:58 - Challenges during writing the book 06:51 - Constitutional Dictatorship 8:32 - “Some people talk of revolution.
