When can we learn a life lesson? When we or someone else shares their experiences. This is my embarrassing experience when I was learning to fly my PPC (Powered Parachute). It was "Check Ride Day". Something every FAA licensed pilot prepares for, looks forward to and sometimes dreads. I'll admit I was nervous that day. I arrived at the airport after a 2 1/2 hour drive. It was barely light out when I started getting prepared. I had launched a helium balloon as I always did to check wind direction and speed as well as calling an automated telephone number for airport current weather conditions. Everything was going smoothly as I practiced my test maneuvers I suspected would be on the final check ride. When I attempted the last maneuver a simulated landing, things did not go so good. I ended up landing in a field of oats that was at least 2 feet tall. After packing up the parachute that is attached to the aircraft, I was motoring back to a county road. I was now on a dirt road that I was thankful for and was adjacent to the oat field. As I was doing this I came across another field only this time the vegetation was much much shorter. I was only thinking about one thing, getting out of there and back to the airport. By this time I was sure my FAA instructor had arrived and was wondering where I was. Well, I did make it out of there and I did arrive late back at the airport. Then it was time to find out if I failed my test before it even began. As I mentioned in this video, the Rotax 582 engine failed after the check ride months later. At the time my wife and I were at 500+ feet. The connecting rod on the piston ended up breaking out the bottom of the crankcase in flight. Be safe and be blessed. :-)
