It was a great honour to be joined by our Patron, Lord Patten of Barnes, the last Governor of Hong Kong, in the latest episode of our In Conversation with Benedict Rogers Youtube series. As the 24th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong is approaching, as well as the first anniversary of the introduction of the draconian National Security Law, Lord Patten shared his views on the past 24 years since he left Hong Kong and his insights on the situation in the city today. In a wide-ranging conversation, Lord Patten discussed China’s broken promises and undermining of the rule of law in Hong Kong, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s wolf-warrior diplomacy, as well as the UK and international policy response. Commenting on Xi Jinping’s recent speech, Lord Patten described the goal of presenting China as “loveable, credible and respected” as “the three incredibles”, given the CCP’s behaviour in Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong and throughout China as well as its increasing aggression overseas. Lord Patten also emphasised the importance of Hong Kong Watch’s work. “Hong Kong Watch has done a terrific job in doing research and providing the results of that research to a wider community,” he said. “Hong Kong Watch is incredibly important in helping to keep the British government and other international governments on message on Hong Kong.” On the anniversary of the handover, and the first anniversary of the UK government’s British National Overseas (BNO) visa scheme, Lord Patten said: “I welcome those who come to the United Kingdom and think that we're very, very lucky to have them, and Hong Kong is unfortunate to lose them.” | SUPPORT US to continue defending Hong Kong’s freedoms | https://www.hongkongwatch.org/donate #HongKongWatch #香港監察
