Follow me on Instagram @volkswizard.co.uk In this video filmed at Millbrook proving ground in Bedfordshire, I spend 30 mins with Cupra's Born EV which is more than enough to get the measure of it. When launched it was described as an electric hot hatch which is promising a lot considering there is nothing to inspire keen drivers when it comes to VW's ID.3, the car upon which the Born is very heavily based. With regards to it being the car Cupra UK didn't want me to drive, let me explain the full story; When I knew the Born was imminent I contacted Cupra UK and asked them if I could go to launch events seeing as I was fan of both the SEAT brand and its Cupra derivatives. I am not entitled to be invited to events but I'd been loaned a car previously by SEAT UK and it wouldn't be unreasonable for someone with a reasonably popular channel largely focussing on performance VW Group vehicles, to be part of a launch programme for a car like this. I can't recall whether they said no or just didn't reply (I suspect the latter) but it soon became clear that Cupra UK prefer to engage with influencers (not reviewers) who do not make criticism in their content. It's worth pointing out that the 1 car SEAT UK loaned me, I was critical of and I suspect I was blacklisted because of this. While Cupra UK of course loan cars to established media outlets like Top Gear, EVO, What Car? etc and these guys (largely) offer fair reviews with criticism where due, untainted by the fact Cupra UK spend a lot of money on advertising with them (fair play especially to EVO for not going too easy on their long term Born loaner even though it's been on the back cover for many issues recently), they don't need to have their cars criticised however fairly by channels like mine, so easiest solution is to just ignore, something that's a bit harder at this SMMT event. My last message from Cupra UK said that the cars were all booked out for months and I replied asking instead for a Formentor which wasn't at all new on the press fleet, and to this I got no reply, make of that what you will :) Read about electric cars' massive depreciation spirals here; https://www.standard.co.uk/tech/why-e...
