Less than two weeks before the elections, Hungary’s young voters are rallying behind Péter Magyar’s Tisza party and posing the strongest challenge to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in years. According to Associated Press polls show the center-right, pro-Western Tisza party dominates among voters under 30, while older voters are sticking with the current Fidesz government. A generational gap is widening in Hungary with the country’s youth pushing overwhelmingly for an end to Orbán's autocratic rule while the oldest citizens remain loyal to the prime minister — a split that could be a decisive factor in the outcome of pivotal April 12 elections. Orbán, 62, is trailing in the polls behind Magyar, a 45-year-old lawyer who broke with Orbán's nationalist-populist Fidesz party in 2024 and has since led Tisza on a rapid political rise. "I think young people really like Péter as a person because he has a bit of that rebellious type with a youthful energy. He’s very outspoken, he speaks his mind, and I think that conveys a sense of absolute reliability,” said 24-year-old student and Tisza volunteer Levente Koltai. Magyar's success — and the declining popularity of Fidesz during economic stagnation and various political and corruption scandals — has widened the demographic divide. A recent survey by the Hungarian pollster 21 Research Center found that 65% of voters under 30 plan to support Tisza, while only 14% are backing Orbán. Márton Korcsmaros, another opposition supporter, believes that Tisza is the only party that talks about progress. "Progress is the only way to move a country forward. It often seems that Fidesz is supported by older people, often simply by rote. They tend to choose security over new things," he said. Orbán’s government defines its philosophy both as Christian-national and “illiberal,” and has steadily drifted away from its partners in the European Union in favor of closer relations with Russia and China.
