BEHOLD the Bessler Wheel Secret!

This is an accurate computer simulation of the hidden internal mechanics of Johann Bessler's prototype "self-moving" wheel that he constructed in late 1711 in Gera, Saxony (note that its speed of rotation has been greatly reduced to allow better viewing of the synchronized motions of its interconnected levers). It was only 36 inches in diameter and had eight Y shaped, spring and cord suspended levers that each carried a small 6 ounce lead ingot at the end of one of its three arms. It could, after several minutes of running, gradually reach a speed of over 60 rpm's. It had taken Bessler a decade and the construction of about one hundred handmade models to finally find a design that was self starting and could run continuously. All of his later and larger wheels where based on that small prototype's design.
