Docusate is a stool softener. It draws water into the stool to make it softer, which helps relieve constipation. As it is an anionic surfactant that lowers the surface tension of the oil and water interface of the stool, allowing fecal material to be penetrated by water and fat, thereby softening the stool. It is available as capsules and tablets, syrup and enema. Docusate is used in the short-term treatment of constipation; prophylaxis in patients who should not strain during defecation, such as after anorectal surgery, myocardial infarction, also used to evacuate the colon for rectal and bowel examinations, and for prevention of dry hard stools.
