NEW MARITIME DEFENCE SYSTEM TO RINGFENCE AUSTRALIA: LEADING DEFENCE COMPANIES JOIN FORCES TO DELIVER INTELLIGENCE, SURVEILLANCE AND RECONNAISSANCE (ISR) NET TO CATCH ADVERSARIES • A powerful and omnipresent Australian-made system revealed at the Indo Pacific International Maritime Exposition will detect, classify and transmit actionable intelligence to deter hostile sub-sea and surface contacts on major approaches to Australia. • Sovereign Shipbuilder Austal’s renowned surface fleet will integrate with Australian innovator C2 Robotics’ Speartooth family of vehicles and Thales Australia’s suite of undersea warfare sensors to provide Persistent, Long-Range Sub-surface ISR. • When deployed together, the capabilities that are already individually operational, will seamlessly surveil Australia's sensitive waters and sea lines, providing anti-access / area denial (A2D) capability to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and allied nations. This includes expendable unmanned underwater vehicles, which will provide the necessary scale for surveillance in Australia’s vast and diverse maritime tracts, enabling Australian personnel to operate safely out of harm's way. Three of Australia’s leading defence innovators have combined their strengths and capabilities into a tech-driven and battle-hardened maritime warfighting system designed to protect the nation’s economy and security. Thales Australia has partnered with C2 Robotics, a cutting-edge defence robotics and autonomous systems company, and Austal, Australia’s global shipbuilder, to deliver a sovereign Persistent, Long-Range Sub-surface Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) system. This system is designed to detect, classify, and transmit actionable intelligence as part of an integrated, focused defence force. It will enable the discovery, tracking, deterrence, or repulsion of hostile sub-sea and surface contacts in areas vital to Australia’s national security. The layered military system integrates: • Thales Australia’s BlueSentry Thin Line Towed Array and BlueSeeker advanced passive sense and avoid capability into C2 Robotics’ silent, long endurance Speartooth underwater vehicle to better leverage the coverage of the uncrewed system and extend its situational awareness across vast maritime domains. • Austal’s fleet of Evolved Cape Class Vessels which already protect our coastline with the Australian Border Force and Royal Australian Navy. • Thales’ compact and powerful Combined Active Passive Towed Array Sonar (CAPTAS 1) which provides premium 360-degree surveillance, operating at low frequency with long pulses so it can be deployed at variable depths. Thales Australia’s BlueSentry Thin Line Towed Array, BlueSeeker passive sensor, and CAPTAS 1 active sonar are world leading sonar systems with advanced acoustic sensors enabling persistent, long-range detection. The integration of these capabilities into other advanced systems and vessels will allow dispersed platforms to operate in concert, simultaneously being able to deploy a network of active and passive arrays across great distances, while being able to network underwater, which is a major strategic step. The operational effectiveness of our ISR and A2D system is driven by the Thales BlueMMS Mission Management System, which empowers dynamic planning and seamless coordination of diverse assets. By integrating both live and simulated data streams, the system ensures robust situational awareness and responsive decision-making. Further enhancing capability are Thales personnel, whose deep expertise in Australia’s unique maritime environments, combined with trusted, proven, and adaptive sensor technologies, underpin mission success across a wide range of operational scenarios. With 19 Austal Cape and Evolved Cape Class Patrol Boats deployed within the ADF and ABF fleet (as at Nov 2025), and with three more currently in construction, the Evolved Cape Class Patrol Boat represents the ideal platform from which to deploy and manage this capability. As Australia’s Sovereign Shipbuilder and with extensive experience in systems integration and capability delivery, Austal personnel are best placed to turn this unique collaboration into a valuable deterrence capability. C2 Robotics’ Speartooth vehicle has been designed to be payload agnostic so that it can rapidly integrate whatever systems its operators require. The incorporation of BlueSentry Thin Line Array into Speartooth showcases this modular approach as an effective, affordable and scalable solution for a wide variety of missions.
