To check out more from the band: https://linktr.ee/pinksnail A word from pinksnail: 'During the global lockdown of 2020 Vicky Mettler and I discussed recording a live session of the music of pinksnail for the series Live in Concrete. Teaming up with Gabriel Lapierre, we decided to apply for a grant through the Canada Arts Council and were successful. With myself producing the music and organizing the players, Vicky organizing the audio production and Gab organizing the film crew, I knew we had a solid team to create something we could all get behind. with friends and collaborators Jory Strachan on Drums, Shanika Maria on vocals, Miel Azevedo on keys + vocals, Anne Hedonia on omnichord + vocals and Thanya Iyre on violin; the music was able to expand in a way I could only dream of. The skillship in listening, improvising and playfulness from these players crafts these songs in a light unique to the recordings I produce alone for pinksnail. this session was recorded dec 15th 2021 on lands known as Tiohtiá:ke, Mooniyang or the settlement Montreal; during the initial outbreak of the omicron variant of covid-19. the producers made the decision that masking up was a necessary part in keeping the participants safe from exposure. at the end of the shoot day it was discovered that someone on the crew tested positive for covid from an exposure days before. we believe that wearing masks was a big part of preventing transmission to the rest of the crew. days later quebec re-instated a curfew. with the movement of these pieces, delaying the recording by even a few days would mean it would not have been possible to record this music in this way. this session also took place during the funeral of one of my teachers and mentors; Dr Barry Harris. The crew was prayerful during the duration of this recording in respect to the incredible contribution to music and pedagogy Barry had on Turtle Island and the world. The mix was completed by Kurt Ballou of God City Studios, while Kurt dedicated time backstage during Converge's 2022 tour with Meshuggah. both of these bands and their music is another important influence onthe sound and approach to the music of pinksnail.' bio: pinksnail is one of the many projects of Evelyn Charlotte-Joe Fraser Coyne; an active musician, recording engineer, accompanyist and educator. pinksnail is their outlet for song writing; an experiment of combining folk + pop songforms with punk and metal vocabulary and texture. pinksnail is due to release a full length album titled "this mess is more blessed with u in it" sometime in 2023. Some songs from this album have been arranged with others; arranged for this group of players for this performance. pinksnail is a funeral with birthday cake. An ode to birth death as a choral punk frenzy. Perfectly accessible Singsongs ruined by down-tuned acoustic guitar, bombastic math metal drumming and a choir in 3 part harmony; spewing hooks about grief, sex-sads, fast-food and a gratefulness to be alive. Between the syncopated riff raff and dissonant harmonic moves, the closest comparison is either Converge subbing as Fionna Apple's backing band, or Meshuggah cosplaying as Bare Naked Ladies for their Halloween bands as bands. A hodgepodge of Pop Song form, Heavy Drum breaks, Creamy Choral chords and Mathed out riffs you might as well toss out yr calculator to fully enjoy; pinksnail is the Chorale Pop/Math Punk mashup no one asked for, but if you chug yr triple triple from timmies fast enough, you might actually appreciate the effort.
