Since the Vasanta Vishuvat moves very very slowly (1° every 72 years) due to the precession of the equinox, it is possible to work backward from its position to specific calendar years. In the first half of this tutorial, we note the position of vasanta vishuvat on a few dates of historic importance in India. We thus establish the concept that the ecliptic can be considered to be a "time line" and the vasanta vishuvat a marker on the timeline to indicate specific years. In the second part of this tutorial, we use this concept to date ancient Indic works such as Vedanga Jyotisha, and the Taitiriya Samhita and the Taitiriya Brahmana of the Yajur Veda. For instance, the Vedanga Jyotisha documehts that the vasanta vishuvat was 10° inside Bharani nakshatra. It is easy to visualize, using Stellarium, that this happened in the vicinity of 1200 - 1300 BC thus placing the date of Vedanga Jyotisha about 1000 years before the time of the classical Greek civilization! A similar analysis also places the antiquity of the Vedas at 2350 BC, which is contemporaneous with the Babylonian civilization. Since these years fall within the accepted extant of the Indus Valley civilization, this also raises the intriguing possibility that the Indus Valley people were the creators of the Vedas! Yet, it is to be noted that in the absence of corroborative evidence (such as decipherment of the Indus Valley script), such finding can only be tentative in nature. This tutorial relies on the research of Sri. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, documented in his book "The Orion - Researches into the Antiquity of the Vedas".
