What is a Permutation Group in Group Theory?

The origins of Group Theory in Abstract Algebra were groups of permutations. Galois was studying permutations when he was thinking about permuting roots of polynomial equations. Given a set A, a permutation of A is just a one-to-one and onto function from the set A to itself. A permutation group of the set A is a set of permutations of A that forms a group under function composition.
