A cinematic exploration across the Saddleworth Moors - following forgotten paths, hidden histories, and the ancient stories buried beneath the peat. In this short film, I return once again to Broadhead Noddle, a mysterious mound on the edge of the moor that has become the centrepiece of my work. From ancient landscape features to lost folklore and the writings of historic writers, this journey traces the places where memory clings to the land. After exploring Broadhead Noddle, I walk across the moors toward the Roman Fort at Castleshaw, reflecting on the incredible fact that this quiet corner of Northern England was recorded by Ptolemy thousands of miles away in Egypt — named Rigodunum in his 2nd-century geography. This film blends landscape cinematography, personal storytelling, and on-location exploration to reveal the forgotten histories of Saddleworth, and the landscapes that shaped them. ⏱️ Timeline 00:00 - Exploring Saddleworth and it's ancient past 01:27 - Mystery of Broadhead Noddle - is this a long lost burial mound? 05:00 - Reflections 06:51 - Castleshaw Roman Fort - a look at Ancient Britain in the North 07:33 - Ptolemy's links to Saddleworth - a reference in Egypt 📍 Locations in this film: Broadhead Noddle (Saddleworth) The Saddleworth Moors Castleshaw Roman Fort Roman roads & ancient landscape features 📚 Topics explored: Ancient history of Saddleworth Folklore, landscape memory, and forgotten sites Ammon Wrigley’s writings Ptolemy’s Geography & Rigodunum Rediscovering lost stories through modern technology 🧭 About Me I’m Richard Glover — a photographer, storyteller, and moorland explorer from Saddleworth.
