'피격 사망' 아베 前총리는 누구…한국과 악연도 Shinzo Abe will be remembered as a PM who tried to revive Japan's economy and transform his nation into a more internationally engaged power. His assertiveness, though, often put Tokyo at odds with its neighbors, South Korea and China. Han Seong-woo has the full story. So who exactly was Shinzo Abe? Born into a prominent political family that included a foreign minister father... and a grandfather who served as premier himself, the 67-year-old conservative was Japan's longest serving prime minister. Before his two stints at the top from 2006 to 2007 and 2012 to 2020... Abe was chief cabinet secretary under former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and later elected head of the Liberal Democratic Party... the center-right stronghold that has dominated Japanese politics since the party was founded in 1955. Health problems cut his first premiership short but Abe staged a comeback to regain power in 2012 and launched "Abenomics"... a combination of monetary easing, increased government spending and structural reforms including tax cuts and deregulation... that sought to lift an economy that had stagnated for over two decades following a long period of post-war prosperity. As for foreign policy and national defense, Abe was often labeled a hawk... and even a historical revisionist regarding Japan's actions in World War II. While advancing Japan's longstanding security alliance with the United States, he attempted, albeit unsuccessfully, to amend Article 9 of Japan's pacifist constitution... which renounces war and prohibits an army... much to the anger of South Korea and China. His visits to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine, which honors, among others, war criminals, did not help Japan's diplomatic relations with the two countries either. After leaving office, Abe became an outspoken critic of Beijing's ambitions in the Indo-Pacific... even urging the U.S. to scrap its strategic ambiguity toward Taiwan and commit to the territory's defense should it come under a Chinese attack. Health issues again forced Abe to step down as prime minister in September 2020... a year before the one-year-delayed and covid-stricken Tokyo Summer Olympics he played a key role in... opened to no fans... in the stands.
