Follow us on: Instagram: / the_hobby_musician Today we’re continuing on our first custom build...for a famous guitarist!! That’s right, we’ll be working with the one and only Rob Tahan, lead guitarist for Ashes Remain, to create a highly customized (and unusual) guitar. In this episode, I’ll take us through everything we did to build the neck...except how we got the angled headstock! That part warrants its own video so make sure you check it out after you finish this one. Like always, we used some reclaimed wood to laminate together and create a starting neck blank. From there, a little DIY routing rig helped us cut in our truss rod channel. After the internal workings had been sorted out, I used some guide screws to help me keep the fingerboard in place as I glued and clamped it down. Then, the back of the neck was surprisingly easy to carve using my grinder and the faceting method (that I learned from Crimson Guitars...). The final, and probably coolest, part of this neck is the crazy, hybrid fret arrangement. Since we want to end up with only a partially fretted neck, I actually still needed to hand cut ALL the fret placements, even though I was only going to install the first five. The reason of that is that I went back and used some plastic syringes and enamel paint to inject down into the groves...as if a fret was there! This way, I could finish sand the final surface back down to flat and whenever Rob looks down as he’s playing, he’ll be able to see where the frets “should” be, but not ever feel or interact with them, allowing for that fretless experience higher up on the neck. Overall, this was a super fun neck to build, and I can’t wait to hear the kind of music Rob comes up with!! As always, we hope you got something out of this episode to help you with your own projects so until next time, play on my friends, play on!!
