Today's ride takes you to the absolute peak sideshow event of the Santos Tour Down Under: the Oakley Carpark Climb. If you thought pro cycling was all about aero suits and marginal gains, think again. This is pure concrete, cowbells, and chaos in the heart of the Adelaide CBD. It was a sweltering 42°C (107.6°F) and instead of finding a nice shady gum tree for a snooze, I refitted the gravel tyres and decided to do something silly. I foraged my way over to the wildest, loudest, most unhinged night at the Carpark Climb. We’re talking six storeys of lactic acid and 1000-watt sprints. While the DJ drops beats, the Red Bull flows and the Beechworth Pale Ales stay cold, the vibes were higher than a kookaburra in a Ghost Gum! I headed out earlier in the week (Men’s TDU Prologue day) for a sneaky recon before the madness was set to kick off on Saturday the 24th of January. With only 72 riders in the field, it’s fast, it’s slippery, and it’s completely ridiculous. I was told you never know who’ll show up - and word in the top paddock was that some Pro riders were looking to swoop in like a magpie!
