Josef J. Pihert (1845-1911) was a Czech bandmaster, choirmaster, a prolific composer who ran a music school in Prague. Seven of his works were published c. 1906 in the eighth volume of “Archives de l’Organiste, Pieces for Organ or Harmonium by the best authors of all countries," edited by M. l’Abbé Henri Delépine. (Several of these books, including Vol. 8, are now available on IMSLP.) This Prélude in C, and Antienne in F, are lovely, restful pieces, equally playable for church or the salon. The instrument is a small French harmonium, built by Bertheaux Frères in the Belleville area of Paris, probably around the 1860s. The instrument has one and a half ranks of 8’ reeds, at the original A=440 tuning and voicing; it belongs to the Bethany United Methodist Church in San Francisco, California. Performed by Michael Hendron; recorded 30 August 2025.
