In January this year, news of Chinese actor Wang Xing being lured there brought renewed attention to the area, prompting a joint crackdown by China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. By February, these joint efforts have achieved initial success, with 7,118 people from 29 countries detained by Myawaddy Border Guard Forces. Despite this, Thai police believe scam compounds along the Thai-Myanmar border are still operating, with up to 100,000 people involved.
