Hypermobile people tend to lock out their joints due to muscle weakness. When standing, this can easily be observed in the hips as one hip is hiked or the legs are crossed or one leg is extended far to a side. Part of the fix for this is to increase strength in the gluteus medius (glute med) and gluteus maximus (glute max). The gluteus maximus is a major hip extensor. When it is underactive, the hamstrings take over (yup. Weak glutes contribute to the inability to release the hamstrings). When the hamstrings take over for glute max, they also externally rotate the leg so the feet turn out (in conjunction with the muscles connected to the IT band. Yup, that’s why the sides of your thighs are always tender and tight). In addition, the adductors become overactive so the feet swing in towards the midline during walking. This leads to tripping on flat even surfaces. The gluteus medius helps stabilize the hip and prevent shifting to the side. It also internally rotates the leg so the feet turn in. Strengthening glute med restores the rotation of the leg, if the feet are turned out. As always, check with a medical professional before starting an exercise program. Hip needs vary depending on individual considerations. You may need different exercises for each side of your body. #hsd #eds #hypermobility #glutes
