Chemistry and Materials Research for the Public Good Since the evolution of publicly funded “curiosity-driven” research in the 20th century there has been much debate at the level of government policy-makers concerning the value of such research in relation to “target-oriented” research with a mission to translate discoveries to the market place. One of the earliest publications in this area was written by J. D. Bernal,1 otherwise known as “The Sage” who inspired the field of protein X-ray crystallography. In this presentation a number of seemingly academic examples selected from the world of curiosity-driven research in the fields of Chemistry and Materials Science research will be used to illustrate how they have been translated to successful commercial exploitation.
