Colburn School of Music Recording, While this is not the most performed or famous arrangement of themes from Carmen, Busoni’s arrangement takes a different turn in the purpose for which it was written. Despite its short length, this arrangement effectively conveys the opera’s plot, which tells the story of Carmen—a beautiful and seductive young woman from Seville, Spain—who becomes entangled in the dangers of love and, ultimately, is killed. Unlike other arrangements, Busoni chooses to focus on the opera’s tragic moments. The central motif throughout the fantasy originates from the prelude, as well as from the orchestral introduction to Don José’s Flower Aria. This tragic aria, which appears in the arrangement, reflects the frustration of his unfulfilled love for Carmen. Next comes the famous Habanera dance, presented in a way that resonates with Don José’s aria. The arrangement concludes not with grandeur and fanfare, but with the sounds of the tragic motif from the opera’s overture, descending in a long chromatic line that reflects the doom inherent in love—the death of Carmen.
