The shift has been employed to counter left handed power hitters who have a tendency to pull the ball. It is often accredited to Lou Boudreau as a way to defend against Ted Williams. But the “Williams Shift” was employed at least twenty years before Boudreau used it. It was used against Philadelphia Phillies left-handed power hitter, Cy Williams.
