Not only did we get to see some amazing things in Yellowstone - like this Grand View - but we learned the why’s and how’s of it all, which is one thing we love about traveling. So buckle up, because school is in session… The Yellowstone River plunges 308 feet over the Lower Falls and then slices through an ancient hydrothermal basin, that is 500,000 years old and made of hardened lava and welded ash. Hot areas and steam vents still exist in the canyon to this day. They allow heat, gases and hot water to escape from the underground Yellowstone volcano. Note: on cool days, puffs of steam waft from vents near the bottom of the canyon. You’ll also see cinnamon colored splotches on the canyon walls -they form when in the rock is exposed to moisture and oxygen.
