In 1458 John Robotham (from St Albans) married Mary Ribergh of Riber Hall and hence became master of Riber Hall (The National Archives 11/53/552). They had a daughter Margaret Robotham who married William Wolley. This beautiful restored Grade11 listed Elizabethen manor house was home to the famous Derbyshire Wolley family until 1668. It is rumoured that a secret passageway exists from the hall to Dethick where the Babingtons lived. Anthony Babington (1561 - 1586) was an English nobleman who was convicted of plotting the assignation of Elizabeth 1st of England and conspiring with the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots. It is alleged Mary Queen of Scots was detained in Riber Hall and indeed one of the bedroom suites would suggest this. During the civil war (1642 - 1651) Riber Hall was a royalist stronghold (although recent research now suggests otherwise!) By 1724 Riber Hall was owned by the Chappel family and two sisters divided the hall and split it into two halves. One half of this romantic manor house was previously a highly regarded country house hotel. Meanwhile the other untouched side seems to have been forgotten about over the years until now. This hidden, secret of Riber Hall has authentic and fascinating true English charm. In 2004 it was bought by the Gent family as their family home.
