Sleeping mats- which type? Why can't I find the perfect one?

I have a love/hate relationship with sleeping mats regarding comfort and reliability. It seems you can have one but not the other! Here I look at the pros and cons of different types. This is about mats for backpacking so I haven't covered big, heavy mats which may well be very durable but which I'd never consider carrying in a pack. I have deliberately not mentioned any brands - though some viewers will recognise some of the mats shown - as this is about types of mats and my points apply to all makes.
